IAEA AI for Fusion Workshop: Abstracts Close 31 August

Researchers working at the intersection of artificial intelligence, fusion energy and plasma science have only days left to submit abstracts for the IAEA’s Second Workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Accelerating Fusion Energy and Plasma Science.

The workshop will take place from 9 to 12 November 2026 in College Station, Texas, United States, and is intended to bring together researchers, developers, entrepreneurs, practitioners and policymakers working across artificial intelligence, fusion and plasma science.

The programme will examine AI and machine-learning applications in fusion physics and engineering, advanced modelling, digital twins, high-performance computing, data engineering, reinforcement learning and the infrastructure required to deploy AI tools reliably in scientific environments.

The abstract submission deadline is 31 August 2026. Applications for participation, including requests for IAEA financial support where applicable, must be submitted through the Agency’s InTouch+ system by 15 September 2026. IAEA AI for Fusion Workshop

ICRP Task Group 113 Mentorship Open Until 4 September

The International Commission on Radiological Protection is accepting applications for a mentorship position associated with Task Group 113, providing an important opportunity for students and early-career professionals in medical physics, radiation protection and scientific computing.

Task Group 113 is preparing an ICRP publication on reference organ absorbed and effective dose coefficients for common paediatric diagnostic fluoroscopic examinations. To make the dose-coefficient information more accessible in practice, the Task Group is seeking a mentee to support development of an interactive web application using R and R Shiny.

The ideal candidate should have experience with R and R Shiny, effective user-interface design, project and quality-assurance planning, software documentation and version-control systems such as Git and GitHub.

The Technical Meeting on Artificial Intelligence Use in Nuclear Operations: Bridging Intelligence and Operations for a Safe, Secure and Resilient Nuclear Power Industry will take place from 30 November to 4 December 2026.

The meeting is being organised through the IAEA Artificial Intelligence Working Group under the International Network on Innovation to Support Operating Plants. The working group already connects more than 130 experts from 30 Member States and international organisations across nuclear engineering, safety, security, digital systems, data science, human factors and knowledge management.

Contributions are invited on AI applications being researched, tested or moving towards deployment in operating nuclear power plants as well as advanced reactors, nuclear materials, radioactive waste management and nuclear security.

Participants may propose either standard presentations or shorter rapid talks.

Applications must be submitted through IAEA InTouch+ by 4 September 2026. Applicants seeking to make a presentation must also submit their title and abstract by the same date. All participants must be designated by an IAEA Member State or invited organisation.

The opportunity is relevant not only to established nuclear-power countries. African newcomer programmes will increasingly need to understand how AI, cybersecurity, digital instrumentation and human-machine interaction could affect future regulatory, operational and workforce requirements.

IAEA Remote Handling and Maintenance Meeting Also Open

Professionals involved in robotics, remote operations, nuclear maintenance and advanced engineering should also note the IAEA Technical Meeting on Remote Handling and Maintenance, scheduled for 2 to 5 November 2026 in Vienna.

The meeting is aimed at specialists working on technologies that allow inspection, repair, maintenance and handling activities to be performed remotely in nuclear and fusion environments.

Participation forms and grant applications, where applicable, must be submitted through official channels by 4 September 2026. The same date applies to presentation-title submissions for regular contributions.

Isotope Hydrology 2027 Offers Major Opportunity for African Researchers

Among the opportunities currently open, the International Symposium on Isotope Hydrology: Shaping the Future of Water — Tracers to Trends has particularly strong relevance for Africa.

The symposium will take place in Vienna from 10 to 14 May 2027 and will examine the use of isotope techniques to understand groundwater systems, water resources, environmental processes and changing hydrological conditions.

Synopses must be submitted by 11 September 2026. The IAEA specifies that submissions should generally be between 500 and 600 words and must be provided electronically in the required Word format. Participants must also complete the appropriate Member State designation process through InTouch+.

The scientific relevance for Africa is considerable. Isotope hydrology can contribute to understanding groundwater recharge, identifying water sources, analysing contamination, assessing climate-related changes and strengthening the scientific basis for sustainable management of scarce water resources.

This creates opportunities not just for nuclear scientists but for hydrogeologists, environmental physicists, geoscientists, water-resource specialists and researchers working at the intersection of nuclear techniques and sustainable development.

IAEA Isotope Hydrology Symposium 2027

World Nuclear University Summer Institute 2027 Comes to Cape Town

The World Nuclear University Summer Institute 2027 remains the standout longer-term opportunity for African nuclear professionals because the programme will be hosted on the continent.

The five-week Summer Institute will run from 30 May to 3 July 2027 in Cape Town, South Africa. Applications are already open.

The programme is designed as an intensive professional and leadership-development experience for people working across the international nuclear sector. It combines technical learning, leadership development, communication, mentoring, professional networking and exposure to senior nuclear-industry leaders.

Applicants will be required to provide personal, professional and academic information, demonstrate English-language proficiency, respond to situation-based leadership questions and obtain a signed endorsement from their manager or supervisor confirming both attendance approval and funding arrangements.

For candidates seeking sponsorship through the IAEA Technical Cooperation Programme, applications close on 16 October 2026. All other applications close on 27 November 2026.

The advertised fee is £18,400 for World Nuclear Association members and £19,400 for non-members. The fee includes programme accommodation, meals and transportation, but does not include international travel to and from South Africa, airport transfers or travel insurance.

Hosting the programme in Cape Town is strategically significant. It provides African nuclear professionals with greater proximity to one of the international sector’s most established leadership programmes at a time when multiple countries on the continent are strengthening nuclear institutions or exploring nuclear-power development.

World Nuclear University Summer Institute 2027

WINS Cybersecurity Training Scheduled for September

The World Institute for Nuclear Security continues to accept applications for its Cybersecurity in the Nuclear Industry course, scheduled for 7 to 11 September 2026 at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom.

The five-day programme is designed to strengthen understanding of cybersecurity across information technology and operational technology used in nuclear facilities.

The course is suitable for facility operators, engineers, cybersecurity and threat analysts, government officials, security personnel and regulatory inspectors. WINS says international participants are also eligible to attend. Twenty-four delegate places are available.

The participation fee is GBP 2,875, excluding travel and accommodation.

The programme combines practical exercises, scenario-based discussions and lessons from cybersecurity incidents and is designed to support participants who may subsequently pursue WINS Academy Nuclear Security Professional Certification with a cybersecurity specialisation.

Because the programme begins on 7 September, interested African applicants should verify seat availability before making travel arrangements.

WINS Cybersecurity in the Nuclear Industry Course

WINS Opens December Workshop on Cobalt-60 Source Security

WINS is also accepting applications for an international workshop on the Security of Radioactive Sources Used in Gamma Irradiators and at Facilities that Store, Handle and Distribute Cobalt-60 Sources.

The meeting will be held in Vienna on 9 and 10 December 2026 and will examine physical protection, credible threats, response arrangements, cybersecurity, source loading and maintenance operations, security by design and security across the cobalt-60 lifecycle.

The target audience includes commercial and research gamma-irradiator operators, organisations that handle or distribute cobalt-60, regulators, law-enforcement bodies and other organisations involved in radioactive-material security.

Participation is free of charge, although participants are expected to finance their own travel and accommodation.

The programme is particularly relevant to Africa because high-activity radioactive sources continue to support important applications in health care, industry, agriculture and research.

Vacancies can range from nuclear engineering and safeguards to nuclear security, legal affairs, radiation protection, scientific computing, programme management and administrative roles.

These opportunities often have relatively short application windows. Applicants seeking international nuclear careers should therefore avoid relying solely on periodic vacancy announcements and instead monitor the official portals regularly.

Watchlist: Marie Skłodowska-Curie and Lise Meitner Programmes

The IAEA Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme should remain high on the watchlist for African women pursuing master’s-level studies in nuclear-related disciplines.

The Lise Meitner Programme should likewise remain on the professional-development watchlist for women already working in nuclear fields.

NuclearAfrica is not listing either programme as an active application call in this edition because a new open application cycle has not been verified for the current roundup.

Prospective applicants should nevertheless begin preparing documentation and monitor official IAEA announcements rather than relying on outdated calls from previous cycles.

Why This Matters for Africa

Africa’s nuclear workforce challenge is becoming broader. Developing nuclear capacity now requires expertise not only in reactor engineering but also in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, safeguards, radioactive-source security, radiation protection, environmental science, water-resource management, robotics, advanced computing, nuclear law and institutional leadership.

The opportunities currently open illustrate this shift. For African countries considering nuclear power, participating in programmes such as the IAEA AI technical meetings can help ensure that future workforce and regulatory strategies take account of technological developments already reshaping the international nuclear sector.

For countries without immediate nuclear-power plans, programmes in isotope hydrology, radiation protection and radioactive-source security remain directly relevant to existing applications of nuclear science and technology.

The larger challenge is ensuring that African professionals can actually access these programmes.

Many IAEA opportunities require formal designation through national authorities. This means an international deadline of 4 September may translate into a much earlier internal deadline at an atomic energy commission, regulatory body, foreign ministry or national liaison office.

African universities, regulators, nuclear organisations and research institutions should therefore establish stronger internal systems for identifying suitable candidates, circulating opportunities early and supporting nomination processes.

The objective should not simply be greater African participation in international meetings. It should be the deliberate construction of a pipeline of professionals whose international training directly supports national and regional nuclear capabilities.
