McMaster University has announced that registration is open for the 2026 Nuclear Energy and Radioisotope Development Camp, popularly known as NERD Camp 2026. The programme will take place at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, across two sessions: July 27–30, 2026, and August 4–7, 2026.

The NERD Camp is a four-day, three-night immersive learning experience designed to introduce young learners to nuclear science, radioisotopes, and wider STEM topics through practical, hands-on engagement. According to McMaster University, the 2026 edition is the second annual camp and is focused on welcoming Indigenous youth in Grades 9–12, including students graduating in the 2025–2026 academic year.

Participants will engage in hands-on STEM activities, guided tours of the McMaster Nuclear Reactor and other nuclear research facilities, as well as social and cultural activities that provide an experience of university campus life. The programme is also intended to demystify nuclear science and expose students to future pathways in science, technology, engineering, and related fields.

Each session has a capacity of 20 students, with accompanying chaperones. The first session runs from July 27–30, 2026, with applications due by July 17, 2026. The second session runs from August 4–7, 2026, with applications due by July 24, 2026.

The camp is fully funded by Bruce Power. McMaster University states that meals, accommodation, tours, and activities will be provided at no cost to participants. Eligible travel expenses may also be reimbursed with appropriate proof of payment.

For Nuclear Africa, initiatives such as NERD Camp 2026 are important examples of how early exposure, practical learning, and inclusive education can help build the next generation of nuclear scientists, engineers, communicators, regulators, and policy professionals. As African countries expand interest in nuclear energy, research reactors, radioisotopes, nuclear medicine, radiation safety, and nuclear security, youth-focused programmes remain critical to building long-term human capacity.

Interested parents, guardians, or chaperones are encouraged to submit an expression of interest through McMaster University’s official registration process or contact the organisers directly at nucevent@mcmaster.ca.
