The International Commission on Radiological Protection has opened a new mentorship opportunity under Task Group 106, which is developing a report on the application of ICRP Recommendations to activities involving mobile high-risk radiation sources.
The opportunity is aimed at a mentee, or mentees, who will support the final stages of the Task Group 106 report. The report focuses on radiological protection in activities involving mobile high-activity radiation sources, including industrial radiography and other uses of sealed sources in mobile settings. These activities present unique radiation protection challenges because work conditions, locations, shielding arrangements, access controls, and environmental conditions may change continuously.
According to ICRP, the selected mentee or mentees will help review, reorganise, and format a curated list of radiological accidents involving high-risk radiation sources for possible inclusion as an annex to the report. The mentee will also help extract concise lessons learned from each event and support the Task Group Chair and Vice-Chair in reviewing the report’s consistency, structure, terminology, references, and presentation.
This is a valuable opportunity for students, early-career professionals, researchers, regulators, radiation protection officers, and nuclear safety practitioners interested in radiological protection, sealed radioactive sources, industrial radiography, emergency preparedness, and radiation safety.
For Africa, the opportunity is particularly relevant. Many African countries use sealed radioactive sources in medicine, industry, mining, construction, research, and inspection services. Strengthening expertise in the safe and secure management of mobile high-risk radiation sources is therefore essential for protecting workers, the public, and the environment while supporting peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology.
ICRP states that mentorship placements are usually part-time and voluntary, allowing mentees to remain with their home institution while contributing to the work of the Task Group. The assignment is typically for one year, with the possibility of renewal. During the mentorship period, the mentee becomes a member of the relevant ICRP Task Group and receives guidance from an assigned mentor.
Applications are accepted only through the official ICRP Expression of Interest portal. Applicants are required to submit a CV using the ICRP template, in English, in PDF format, and not more than two pages. A letter of support from the applicant’s organisation is also required.
