Africa is steadily positioning itself at the forefront of the global nuclear energy expansion, with several countries advancing ambitious nuclear power programmes aimed at supporting sustainable economic growth, social development, and environmental protection. These developments will take centre stage at the 5th Africa Nuclear Business Platform (AFNBP) 2026, which will convene leading nuclear stakeholders in Abuja, Nigeria, in April 2026.
Under the theme “Africa’s Nuclear Renaissance: Powering Sustainable Growth – Advancing Africa’s Nuclear Energy Future,” the event will bring together policymakers, regulators, industry leaders, investors, and international experts to examine the progress, opportunities, and challenges associated with nuclear energy deployment across the continent.
Africa’s nuclear energy outlook is rapidly evolving. Projections indicate that the continent could achieve up to 15 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2035, with more than 15 African countries currently pursuing nuclear energy programmes at various stages of development. These programmes range from the formulation of national policies and regulatory frameworks to site selection processes and vendor engagement for future nuclear power plants.
To better understand the pace and scale of these developments, the Nuclear Business Platform (NBP) has categorized African nuclear prospects into three tiers, based on factors such as government commitment to nuclear energy, development timelines, and progress in infrastructure and regulatory readiness. This framework provides a useful lens for evaluating where countries stand within the nuclear new-build pathway and how international partnerships can support their progress.
Beyond electricity generation, nuclear technology offers significant opportunities for addressing Africa’s broader development needs. Nuclear power can provide stable, reliable, and low-carbon electricity to support industrialization, stimulate job creation, and strengthen energy security. At the same time, nuclear science and technology play important roles in healthcare, agriculture, water resource management, and environmental protection.
Applications such as cancer treatment through radiation therapy, mutation breeding for improved crop varieties, food preservation technologies, and isotope hydrology for groundwater assessment illustrate the wide-ranging benefits nuclear technology can bring to African societies. From powering major urban centres to supporting rural development initiatives, nuclear solutions have the potential to improve living standards while contributing to climate-resilient development.
The rapid growth of Africa’s nuclear ambitions also presents an important opportunity for the international nuclear community. Strategic partnerships, investment, and knowledge exchange will be critical in helping African countries build the institutional capacity, infrastructure, and human resources required for safe, secure, and sustainable nuclear energy programmes.
The Africa Nuclear Business Platform (AFNBP) has emerged as the continent’s premier high-level gathering dedicated to facilitating such collaboration. Now in its fifth edition, AFNBP 2026 will provide a strategic platform for African governments and international industry stakeholders to engage in dialogue, share expertise, and explore innovative approaches to advancing nuclear energy development.
Participants will discuss key issues including regulatory readiness, financing models, technology options, supply chain development, workforce capacity building, and the role of nuclear energy in supporting Africa’s long-term energy transition.
By fostering partnerships between African nations and global nuclear industry leaders, AFNBP 2026 aims to accelerate the development of a robust nuclear ecosystem capable of delivering lasting economic and environmental benefits.
As Africa moves toward a future defined by sustainable growth and energy security, nuclear power is expected to play an increasingly important role in the continent’s energy mix.
Stakeholders from across the nuclear sector are invited to participate in this important dialogue and contribute to shaping Africa’s nuclear future.
